The Power of the Perfect Ship: A Monday in Mexico

Not all cruise ports are created equal—and that’s perfectly okay.

When you're on the right ship, even a mediocre port day can become one of your most memorable. That was certainly the case this Monday aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas.

Take Costa Maya, Mexico. It's not my favorite port. It’s not bad by any means—it has shops, a public pool, and excursions for first-time cruisers. But compared to other ports of call, it’s lower on my list.

Here’s the magic, though:Because Costa Maya wasn’t our group's top pick, most passengers got off the ship—and we didn’t. That gave us full run of the pools, the slides, the swim-up bar, and all the best corners of the ship that are usually bustling with activity. At one point, our group of 11 had an entire pool and bar area completely to ourselves.

It was one of the best Mondays I can remember.

Cruising is my favorite way to travel:

  • Unpack once.

  • Wake up each day in a new place.

  • Enjoy five-star food and entertainment every night.

  • Be rocked to sleep by the ocean.

The key is choosing the right ship and the right itinerary for you. That’s where I come in. No booking engine or discount website can match what I offer: personalized, first-hand cruise expertise based on years of experience. Because I go, you'll be in the know!
